Ever since the part 4 anime was announced, I have been rereading the part before the anime comes out. This way, the media is fresh in my mind and I can more easily find differences between the manga and the anime, such as what the anime cuts out or what they decide to add that the manga chose not to. One of the more prominent examples of this is from part 5, where the manga chose to go more in depth with some of the backstory of the protagonists of Team Buccellati. If you would like to, you can also do this read along with me and a couple friends who are doing this with me. We will be reading ten chapters per week, come together to talk about it and then afterwards I will write up my thoughts combined with some of their thoughts in this blog. Due to this being a read along, I won't be going over everything that happens in the chapters, as I assume you the reader have also read the chapters recently; I will just be going over the important parts, my thoughts on them and what that might mean for the future (no spoilers, of course. I have read part 6 before but I will only be speculating on things that occur.) So, without further ado, here are my thoughts from the first 10 chapters of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part 6: Stone Ocean.
We meet some important characters in these few chapters, such as Ermes Costello, Romeo and Guess. We also find out pretty quickly that the guards as well as the inmates here at Green Dolphin Prison are just as bizarre as any other JoJo character we have seen from previous parts. One guard even gives the inmates orientation with a crocodile puppet named Charlotte.
One of the main focuses of these chapters is Jolyne's cell partner Guess. She has the stand ability Goo Goo Dolls, which lets her shrink things. She also has hollowed out a couple small animals so that the victims of her stand ability can fit inside them and not rouse any suspicion when moving around the prison. We also learn that Guess has an affinity for cute things, like when she forces Jolyne to speak to her in a cute way and Jolyne opts to go for the "OwO" style of speech in order to appease Guess. From Guess's interactions with others, she seems to be very full of herself while also perhaps being unhinged, as she swaps from manic to apologetic in no time at all. I am no doctor, so I don't want to go about guessing if Guess has some sort of undiagnosed mental illness, I am simply stating the facts as they are presented to us. As the story progresses and Guess was defeated by Jolyne, she becomes much more humble and almost grovels to Jolyne. Guess even gives Jolyne the tip about never borrowing people money in this prison, as it can lead to much trouble in the future.
One of the first things we learn about the young Jolyne Cujoh is that she will do whatever she can to exact her idea of justice. This is made evident when she didn't hesitate to cause her lawyer to have a car accident while driving away from the Green Dolphin Prison. Her lawyer got her fifteen years in prison, so she made him have an accident. In Jolyne's mind, this made them even; this was her revenge. Other previous JoJos, such as Jonathan, were very chivalrous and wanted to be good to others. Jolyne is more like Josuke or Jotaro; they are not bad people and do indeed have a moral compass but will also not hesitate to defeat or kill others who have done wrong. These types of behavior could be due to the fact that Jolyne is rather immature and is only 19 years old in part 6, so she has a lot of growing up to do in the span of Stone Ocean. Speaking of growing up, within these chapters Jolyne gains the ability of her stand, which comes from the amulet that pricked her finger. She dubs this stand Stone Free and has the ability to manifest a fast, powerful close range stand as well as turn Jolyne's body into string in order to do things like steal, dodge attacks or eavesdrop.
Something else I want to touch on is the art style of part 6 so far. The clothes look amazing and are very colorful and vibrant. Araki is really going out of his way to make Jolyne's clothes look better than any other protagonist we have seen up to now! We can clearly tell Jolyne's attitude and personality with just looking at her clothes. She likes to show a little skin but not too much, her clothes are rather form fitting and stand out quite a bit. We have many characters to meet in this part, so be on the lookout for how they dress and how Araki chooses what color palettes to use and when.
The last thing we see in these ten chapters is a boy in what seems to be a baseball uniform run after a baseball. He tells Jolyne that someone at noon tomorrow will come and see Jolyne, but she must not go meet them. This cryptic phrase is the last piece of information we got from these chapters. What did everyone think about reading this? There are many unsolved mysteries still up in the air; where is Ermes? Did Jotaro gives his daughter that amulet knowing it would awaken her stand? Who is this boy and who is meeting with Jolyne? Next week we will be reading 10 more chapters of part 6, so stay tuned!
